The March Film + Music + Interactive Happy Hour, on Wed. March 25th at Spitfire at 5 p.m., will feature a panel of local music industry experts– Christen Greene, Onto Entertainment; Erik Blood, Producer/Engineer/Musician; Jodi Ecklund, Talent Buyer; moderated by City Arts Magazine’s Senior Editor and Music Editor, Jonathan Zwickel – and will cover how Seattle’s underground music scene is burgeoning into a full blown industry.
Despite its out-of-the-way location, lack of longstanding infrastructure, and relatively diminutive size, Seattle is a cultural powerhouse. Seattle music is especially world-renown, and it got that way not through volume of output, but by a more qualitative process.
Put simply, Seattle music is cool. Cool is desirable. And so our modest music community exports sounds and styles to the far corners of the globe. From the largest indie labels, to the smallest genre-pushing dance nights, our scene constitutes an industry. How did it get that way? And how do we sustain it?
About the Panelists:
Christen Greene is the General Manager and Head of A&R at Onto Entertainment – an independent record label and management company based in Seattle & distributed on ADA. Onto manages Hey Marseilles, The Lumineers, PHOX, and Andrea Gibson.
Erik Blood is a Seattle based producer/engineer who has worked with Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, and Moondoggies to name a few. Apart from his production work with other artists, he has released 3 albums of solo material and written music for two feature films.
Jodi Ecklund is a Seattle native and self-proclaimed music junkie. She has been booking bands in the greater Seattle area for 20 years, and has been the Booking Manager for Chop Suey for the past 3 years.
About the Moderator:
Jonathan Zwickel is an author and journalist living in Capitol Hill, Seattle. He’s senior editor of City Arts magazine, a journal of creative living in the Pacific Northwest, a contributor to Pitchfork, SPIN, and Stereogum and has helmed several liner notes projects for Light in the Attic Records. His first book, Beastie Boys: A Musical Biography was published by Greenwood Press in 2012.
